We’ve been getting an increasing number of questions about fertility acupuncture lately—from current patients, new patients, and people who call us in the middle of an IUI or IVF cycle wondering whether acupuncture is something they should be doing.
And the question is usually some version of:
How can acupuncture help with fertility, and when should I start?
The fertility process can quickly become a world of supplements, diets, tests, procedures, and a seemingly endless list of things you’re told you could be doing.
So rather than add to that list, here’s how we think about fertility acupuncture at Jennifer Layne Acupuncture & Wellness.
How does acupuncture fit into fertility treatment?
We use acupuncture alongside conventional fertility care, whether someone is trying to conceive naturally, undergoing IUI, or going through IVF.
There is evidence that acupuncture can help with some of the things that surround fertility treatment, including stress, anxiety, and pain. Acupuncture is also commonly used with the goal of supporting circulation and nervous-system regulation.
But the research goes beyond stress management.
Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have found higher pregnancy rates when acupuncture is used alongside IVF, and some have also reported improvements in live-birth rates. The research isn't completely settled: studies use different acupuncture protocols, treatment schedules, and comparison groups, and the quality of the evidence varies.
Still, there is a growing body of research examining acupuncture as a complement to IVF and other fertility care.
There is also an interesting distinction emerging in the research: fertility acupuncture performed consistently over a period of time may be more useful than receiving acupuncture only once or twice around embryo transfer.
That’s one reason we don’t think of fertility acupuncture as simply an appointment you add on the day of a procedure.
None of this means we can tell you that acupuncture will get you pregnant. We can’t, and we don’t make that kind of promise.
But there is legitimate research behind using acupuncture alongside fertility treatment, and we think it’s worth understanding how—and when—it may fit into your care.
There isn't one “fertility acupuncture protocol”
This is something we wish more people knew.
Someone trying to conceive naturally isn't the same as someone preparing for an egg retrieval. An IUI cycle isn't the same as a frozen embryo transfer. Someone navigating PCOS or endometriosis may have different considerations. And someone coming to us after pregnancy loss brings another set of circumstances altogether.
That means we don't use one fertility acupuncture protocol for everyone.
Instead, we look at your health history, menstrual cycle, fertility diagnosis when applicable, what your reproductive endocrinologist or fertility clinic is doing, where you are in treatment, and what you're actually hoping acupuncture can help with.
Your acupuncture treatment should reflect your fertility journey—not simply the word “fertility” on your chart.
When should I start acupuncture before IVF?
This is one of the most common questions we hear.
If we have the luxury of time, we generally like to begin fertility acupuncture about three months before an IVF cycle.
That gives us time to treat consistently rather than trying to fit everything into the few days surrounding an egg retrieval or embryo transfer. Depending on the individual, treatment during this period may focus on menstrual-cycle regulation, stress and sleep, pain, general health, or supporting the body as fertility medications and procedures begin.
But here's the other thing:
We get last-minute calls all the time.
People call after they've already started IVF medications. They call when their egg retrieval is next week. They call two days before an embryo transfer because someone at their fertility clinic just mentioned acupuncture.
That's okay.
Come when you find us.
We'll meet you where you actually are rather than making you feel like there was one more thing you were supposed to have known about months ago.
What about acupuncture around embryo transfer?
Acupuncture is sometimes offered immediately before or after an embryo transfer, including at some fertility clinics. You may also hear about laser acupuncture being offered on transfer day.
We don't think the entire value of fertility acupuncture should be reduced to a single treatment on embryo-transfer day.
For someone who finds us just before a transfer, treatment may still have a place. But when possible, we prefer to think about acupuncture as part of a broader course of care leading up to IVF and embryo transfer rather than as a one-time intervention that's supposed to determine whether a transfer succeeds.
Can you do fertility acupuncture if you're not doing IVF?
Absolutely.
Many of our fertility acupuncture patients aren't currently undergoing IVF.
We see people who are trying to conceive naturally, undergoing IUI, preparing for IVF, between fertility treatment cycles, or taking a break from treatment. We also work with patients navigating concerns such as irregular menstrual cycles, PCOS, endometriosis, painful periods, and other reproductive-health issues that may be part of the larger fertility picture.
Fertility acupuncture isn't one thing because fertility patients aren't all coming in with the same story.
