The Wellness Products We Actually Use and Keep Coming Back To

There are a lot of wellness products out there. And if you spend any time on Instagram or TikTok, there is always something new you're apparently supposed to be taking, drinking, rolling on or adding to your routine.

We've carried retail products at Jennifer Layne for years, and we've gotten pretty selective about what earns a spot on our shelves.

We don't want a lot of stuff. We want products that are useful, that we feel good recommending to patients and, maybe most tellingly, that people actually come back to buy again.

These are some of our tried-and-true favorites.

CBD Clinic Level 5 Pain Relief Stick

We'll start with our number-one best seller.

The CBD Clinic Level 5 Pain Relief Stick has been a staple around here for years. It's what we reach for when something hurts and you want strong, targeted topical pain relief without getting cream all over your hands.

It contains menthol and camphor as its active topical pain-relieving ingredients, along with broad-spectrum hemp extract and oils including eucalyptus, clove and peppermint.

We like it for sore muscles and those everyday achy areas—neck, shoulders, low back, knees, feet. The stick makes it incredibly easy to swipe exactly where you want it and move on with your day.

There's a reason this continues to outsell everything else on our shelves. It's tried and true.

Evil Bone Water

Evil Bone Water is one of those products that's much easier to understand if you think about when you'd normally reach for a heating pad.

If warmth generally makes something feel better, this is a good one to have around.

It's a traditional Chinese herbal liniment made with Chinese herbs, menthol and camphor, and we like it for stiff, sore or overworked areas that respond well to that warming sensation.

Think tight neck. Achy back. Overworked shoulder. Sore muscles after exercise. That one spot that always seems to tighten up after a long day.

It's been one of our best sellers for years and something a lot of patients first experience in the treatment room before deciding they need a bottle at home.

Queen of the Thrones Castor Oil Roll-On

Castor oil had quite a moment when it went viral on TikTok.

Suddenly there were castor oil packs everywhere, along with claims about everything from bloating and digestion to hormones and “detoxing.” Some of those claims got well ahead of the actual evidence.

But castor oil itself has been used for a very long time, particularly as a rich moisturizer and emollient for the skin and hair.

What we especially like about the Queen of the Thrones Castor Oil Roll-On is that it solves one of the biggest problems with castor oil: it's messy.

The roll-on lets you apply it exactly where you want it without pouring a thick bottle of oil into your hand. It's an easy way to use castor oil on dry skin, cuticles, brows, hair and scalp, or anywhere you want that extra hydration.

TikTok may have been responsible for a whole new generation discovering castor oil. We just prefer keeping the expectations a little more realistic.

Magic Magnesium

Magnesium is everywhere right now, particularly in conversations about sleep, stress, muscle tension and recovery.

And Magic Magnesium happens to be delicious.

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in normal muscle and nerve function, and it's become a popular addition to evening routines for people looking to wind down, support relaxation or recover after exercise.

We don't think magnesium needs to be sold as a miracle sleep cure. We do think it's something many people are interested in incorporating into their routine, and this is one of the easiest—and best-tasting—ways we've found to do it.

Because realistically, the wellness products that work best with your life are usually the ones you'll actually remember to take.

Poy-Sian Herbal Inhalers

If you're someone who loves peppermint oil, you'll probably understand the appeal of these immediately.

Poy-Sian Thai herbal inhalers contain menthol, eucalyptus, camphor and borneol and give you that strong, cooling sensation through the nose that feels incredibly refreshing when you're stuffy.

People reach for them during seasonal allergy season, when they're congested, while traveling, or simply when they want that clear, minty feeling you get from peppermint or eucalyptus.

We love them because they're tiny, inexpensive and easy to keep in a purse, desk drawer or travel bag.

Once people discover them, they tend to come back looking for more.

Tweefontein Elderberry Syrup

As soon as fall rolls around, elderberry syrup starts making its way back into people's refrigerators.

The one we carry comes from Tweefontein Herb Farm in New Paltz, New York, a working herb farm that's been around since the early 1980s—just about an hour up the Thruway from us.

Their formula combines elderberry with echinacea root, rose hips, wild cherry bark, lemon balm, clove, cinnamon and raw honey.

There are endless elderberry products available now, but this is exactly the type of product we like finding: a traditional herbal preparation coming from an actual herb farm relatively close to home.

It's one of our fall and winter staples for people looking to incorporate elderberry and herbal immune support into their cold-weather routine.

Tweefontein Phoenix Risin' Fire Cider

Also from Tweefontein is their Phoenix Risin' Fire Cider.

If you've never tried fire cider, it's an old-school herbal tonic traditionally made by steeping pungent herbs, roots and spices in apple cider vinegar.

Tweefontein's version combines apple cider vinegar with horseradish, garlic, ginger, onion, turmeric, cayenne, paprika and raw honey.

It's spicy. It's warming. And it tends to come back into rotation around the same time as the elderberry syrup.

Fire cider has become popular again as more people have gotten interested in traditional herbal remedies and cold-weather wellness, but this is another case where the idea is hardly new.

We like Tweefontein's version for the same reason we like their elderberry: it's a traditional herbal preparation coming from a real herb farm in New Paltz rather than something created because wellness suddenly became trendy.

What makes something worth carrying?

There's no complicated formula.

After years of treating patients and trying plenty of products ourselves, we've found that the things that stick around tend to be pretty simple: they're useful, easy to use and good enough that people come back for them.

Some have roots in Chinese medicine. Some are herbal preparations that have been around for generations. Some are newer products that simply do their job really well. And occasionally something goes viral on TikTok and turns out to be worth keeping around after the trend moves on.

They don't all need to fit into one wellness philosophy.

They just need to earn their spot.
